Morrow committed to biofuels, education

Mankato Free Press, Sept. 21, 2006

Terry Morrow’s vision for our area concentrates upon creating conditions that will allow our children to live locally and compete globally.

He teaches public speaking and communication ethics at Gustavus Adolphus College and is the chair person of the St. Peter School Board. He is also concerned about global warming and he strongly supports ethanol and biodiesel because they are among the many steps we can take to help solve that problem now. These are exciting economic opportunities for our area.

Morrow drives an E-85 Ford Taurus. Morrow has talked with representatives of the Minnesota Corngrowers Association and the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association to learn how, as our representative, he can help our region expand its share of these markets.

As Morrow says, ethanol and biodiesel bring good jobs, increase our national security, reduce our reliance upon foreign oil and help the environment. His commitment to education and to ethanol and biodiesel are unmatched in this election.

Terry Morrow has record of involvement, achievement

Mankato Free Press, Sept. 18, 2006

Terry Morrow is a husband, father, lawyer, educator and public servant (St. Peter School Board) and bicycle enthusiast. Running for public office will affect his personal and professional life. Attaining that office would profoundly change them.

As a parent with a child in fifth grade, I have been able to observe how Morrow functions within his community. At the time his children were entering school, the district faced huge challenges. Reduced student enrollment, changing demographics, state and federal funding cutbacks and non-funded mandates required changes in the way our school district operated. Morrow’s answer to the challenge was to get involved. He successfully ran for and eventually became Chairman of the St. Peter school board.

Public access television has documented how the school board has successfully met the challenges of the last five years and positioned the school district to meet our educational need.

Going forward, how do we meet the challenges that face District 23A in a state Legislature filled with people concerned about their own districts?

My best course of action is to send a person who has a proven track record of getting involved, being able to understand core needs and able to gather consensus to solve problems.

Morrow has proven to be more than a problem solver.

He is among a group of citizens who have chosen to do their part.

Whoever represents District 23A will be a freshman.

When evaluating individuals who are running for public office, I reflect on what they sacrifice as a measure of their depth as a person. Our best hope is to send someone with a proven record of public involvement and achievement.

Here’s a letter that recently appeared in the Mankato Free Press (8/29/06):

As a professor of mathematics for 28 years, I am acutely aware of how the school districts of our state and country must focus upon educating students more deeply in math and science if we are to remain competitive with other countries in technological expertise and innovation.

Recently, St. Peter was praised several times at the Minnesota School Board Association meeting as being the first district in the state to make the decision to require four years of mathematics/science. I give much of the credit for this and other positive developments in our district to the St. Peter school board, and in particular to Terry Morrow for his dedication and leadership as Chair of the board.

I believe that Morrow would bring to St. Paul the dedication, leadership and integrity that he has shown here in our area, and would be an extremely effective representative for us if we gave him the chance. His legal background, coupled with his people skills developed through years of teaching and leadership experience, will serve us well in the House.
He has always been a generous and caring community member dedicated to improving the lives of others, and it is this dedication to public service that lies at the heart of Morrow’s candidacy for state representative.

The election this coming November provides us with a great opportunity to achieve effective representation in St. Paul.

Morrow has skills to govern

Mankato Free Press

I am writing to voice support for Terry Morrow for the Minnesota State House of Representatives. I feel that experience and service in the community set Morrow apart in this race. I strongly urge the voters to look at Morrow’s history of service and volunteerism in our community as we near the election in November.

Morrow is a demonstrated leader and representative of our community. As a member of the school board, Morrow has been a wonderful advocate for our schools and for our children. Like running a large company, school board members must be familiar with state and federal laws, they must grapple with the rising costs of health care and be innovative in balancing the budget every year. School boards must understand the changes in our student population, advances in teaching, children’s health concerns, and other issues. St. Peter’s school board has an excellent reputation in the state for its careful and visionary management of our schools.
Morrow, as a school board member and now its chair, has worked diligently with the other school board members for years. We know his dedication to honoring the public trust would continue in the state legislature.
Morrow has demonstrated his skills in communication, cooperation and compromise as he has served on numerous boards, committees and commissions in and around our community.

He would not be learning to govern on the job. He has already gained the skills needed to govern and to represent all the members of our community in St. Paul.

Candidate’s proposal would provide funding for outdoors (9/5/06)

Mankato Free Press

Terry Morrow has consistently and publicly stated that he believes that budget cuts in outdoors funding need to be restored, indeed, funding for the outdoors should be increased.

Morrow also has explained how it should be funded. He joins others in proposing an increase in the state sales tax of 3/16 of 1 percent. It would amount to less than four cents on a $20 purchase.

I hear other candidates say they want increased funding for the outdoors, but I haven’t learned how they want to pay for it. There is only so much money in state coffers, so if they want to increase funding for the outdoors from existing state funds, it’s imperative that we ask from where will they take the funds. Education? Health care? Transportation?
Successful families, farmers, businesses and communities are realistic about budget realities. So is Morrow.

We have had enough of budget gimmicks and the unseen passing along of costs from one sector of government to another.

So, when a candidate for the legislature talks about increased funding for the outdoors or other programs, let’s make sure they also explain how they propose to pay for it, just as Morrow has done.
